[ARCHIVED] HARRISON PROGRAMS FOCUS ON ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Programs that focus on environmental sustainability are important to ensuring Harrison is a great place live, work and play now and for future generations. All residents and members of the community play a role in the sustainability of our natural environment. Protecting and developing the tree canopy and managing household waste are two important contributions every citizen can make.

Recycling Program accepts more items

Harrison offers curbside recycling at no additional charge for households in the City. Residents can call Rumpke at (513) 742-2900 to receive a large rolling recycle bin at their house. Residents of apartments and rental housing may need to contact the property owner. Rumpke recently expanded its recycling program and a significant amount of the waste produced in homes can be diverted from landfills by people who participate. A printable sheet lists exactly what can and can't be recycled at home (updated Feb. 2022).

Tree Board Celebrates Arbor Day

Harrison has been a designated Tree City USA for six years. The Arbor Day Foundation oversees a program to celebrate cities committed to growing their tree canopy. Harrison has accomplished this through the Harrison Tree Board. Led by local citizens, the Board encourages the planting of trees to increase the green canopy in Harrison and encourage beautification. The Board approves all new landscape for businesses in Harrison and suggests tree varieties when asked by residents. For Arbor Day, the Board distributes free saplings.

The Board will host its annual Arbor Day event April 26, 7 p.m. at the Harrison branch of the Cincinnati Public Library. Fifty attendees will receive a one-year Persimmon sapling to plant. Attendees will also receive a raffle ticket for a special giveaway in memory of Leo Rolfes, an influential member of the Harrison community who passed away in 2021. Casey Knigga, owner of Casey’s Outdoor Solutions in Bright, will provide a presentation called, “All you want to know about Pruning."  Details and updates will be on the City Calendar.
