During the holiday season, HMCF, together with the various local churches and schools, provides assistance in the form of food, clothing, winter coats, and toys to hundreds of families. People seeking assistance for the holidays can apply at the Harrison Community Center during set times, which are posted on the City Calendar.
HMCF carries out a tradition of giving that began in 1958 with Harrison Mayor Clyde Small. Mayor Small received a turkey that he didn't need, so he gave it to Fred Dole, co-owner of the Whitewater Market on the corner at 102 Harrison Avenue. Dole cut the turkey in half to feed two families in need.
In addition to the toy drive, contributions can also be made by check and sent to: Harrison Mayor's Community Fund, PO Box 471, Harrison, OH 45030. All financial donations to HMCF are used to help local people with grocery vouchers, food pantry items, Duke energy bill assistance, and occasionally rent payments.
